Believe the hype! Big Al’s Down The Hatch in Waxahatchie is the real deal!
To celebrate my birthday last week, a friend and I took the short trip to Waxahachie after hearing many people rave about the eatery.
We walked into the waiting area, past the iron doors to a canvas picture of ‘Hatch’ owner and radio personality Big Al Mack, the iconic Kidd Kraddick, and Kellie Rasberry.
If you listen to Dallas rock stations, you know who Kidd Kraddick is.
This restaurant has the potential to be one of those fantastic go-to spots. We were greeted almost immediately by Big Al. He was extremely friendly, even posed for a birthday photo (I admit, I fan-girled a bit.).
My friend, Lindy and I enjoyed the Fried Catfish special, only served on Fridays. Big Al told us, “We sell out every week, and early.”
The service was fantastic. Our server was training a new hire, and after spending 20+ years in food service, I can tell you – that is a feat. She did a great job of training AND taking excellent care of us.
The two large catfish filets were fried perfectly, served with two lemon wedges, fresh cut French fries, and a cole slaw that was fresh and crisp. I am admittedly a catfish snob.
I expected the let-down. It never happened.
From start to finish, this trip to ‘Hatch’ was fantastic. From the sweet tea to the last bite we could muster, ‘Down The Hatch’ is definitely on the ‘go back’ list.
