Kerens Extends RV Parking Ordinance

The Kerens City Council meeting for the month of November was held on the 8th at 7 pm. The agenda included a discussion to consider a variance to the city’s camper and recreational vehicle ordinance to allow for extended parking times. The current city ordinance limits camper parking to maximum of 7 days, and stipulates that campers must be in good repair and fully registered and legal. This discussion was prompted by a proposal to open a travel trailer/ camper park that would allow renters to occupy the spaces for up to 30 days at a time. The council voted to maintain the current ordinance as-is, and vetoed the idea for the travel trailer/camper park at this time.
The current water contract with the city of Corsicana is up for discussion as the city of Kerens has had a 20 year contract with the city for wholesale purchase of water. This contract is up for renewal, however a motion to pause this was made by the council until further review of the contract and a deeper investigation into the contract can be performed.
Consideration for changes to the city’s health insurance plan was also discussed, to include the addition of the Mayor and elected officials on the council on the current plan. A motion was passed to draft an ordinance to include the additional members for review and to obtain information on policy premiums, before a final decision will be reached.
The city is still pending receipt of a grant to repair the water tower, that should be resolved within the next month. This grant will go towards much needed water tower repairs.
The Kerens Police Department is planning new updates to the police department which will include physical security enhancements and upgrades, all of which will help our police department better serve the community.
As a reminder, city council meetings are held on the first Tuesday after the 5th of the month, at 7 pm, at city hall. These meetings are open to the public, and the community is encouraged to attend.
