The Kerens City Council approved a motion to renew the .25% sales tax for roads at Monday’s regular council meeting.
The proposition will be placed on the May ballot.
The action at Monday’s regular meeting is routine and is taken every four years. The quarter cent tax generates an estimated $10,000 according to Mayor Jeffery Saunders.
Council members also reappointed James Martin and Norton Conner to the Kerens Housing Authority Board of Directors.
The council also rejected the Requests for Proposals for the current cycle of 2026 engineering services.
The city only received one proposal, and will review the process in preparation for the second cycle of the 2026 Community Development Block Grant availability in the coming months.
Community Development Block Grants are designed to assist economically disadvantaged communities to address infrastructure concerns along with other qualifying needs within communities.
The council was also updated about the potential renovation to 100 S. Colket Avenue in Kerens. Randy Vineyard was granted a 60-day extension to present his plan to renovate the property.
Council members also accepted the consent agenda, as well as all routine city utility, police and department reports.
Mayor Saunders also introduced Leara Thorp as the new City Secretary. Thorp previously worked with the City of Log Cabin.
The Kerens City Council regularly meets on the first Tuesday after the fifth of the month at Kerens City Hall, 101 South Colket Avenue.
