Last week, the Kerens Community Development Committee (KCDC) announced the installation of new welcome signs to be installed, highlighting the rich history of the city of Kerens as the birthplace of Texas State Fair mascot, Big Tex. The new signs will be seven feet tall, and feature a picture of a cowboy hat and boots along with the message โ€œKerens, Birthplace of Big Tex, Est. 1881โ€.

While it is unclear where the signs will be located, there are two sites under consideration along Highway 31 at the city limits- one near the newly opened Sonic and Shell gas station, and one near the Old Armory Mall. The poles will include solar lights and landscaping. The funds for this project were raised by KCDC through various community fundraising efforts.

KCDC President Pamela Carroll says, โ€œWe hope these signs will become a symbol of pride for Kerens and a warm welcome for visitors.โ€ The KCDC is committed to continuing its work on projects that enhance the town of Kerens and foster a spirit of community involvement.
