The patriotic spirit of Memorial Day was commemorated during the 12th Annual Kerens Memorial Day program, held May 29th. The program was opened by a flyover of World War II planes presented by the Coyote Squadron Commemorative Air Force, and the presentation by the Honor Guard of Navarro Country Sheriff Department.
The National Anthem was beautifully sung by Christian Country/ Southern Gospel recording artist, Cyndi Reynolds. Ella Engel, of Kerens FFA, lead the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Kerens Cowboy Church Associate Pastor, Craig Hines, opened with a touching prayer, reminding everyone in attendance to be thankful for the sacrifices made by those we commemorate on Memorial Day. The Guest Speaker for the program was Jake Ellzey, US Congressman and Navy Veteran. The Congressman reminded us that we are here to remember that this is special day of remembrance, of those that gave their lives in wars abroad for the freedoms that we enjoy in this great country. He shared a personal thank you to all veterans in attendance, along with their spouses.
The talented Cyndi Reynolds, backed by Zanada Schoppert and Mike Jennings performed “Silver Medals and Sweet Memories”, a song about a family mourning the loss of their loved one that would not return from home from war. The program was closed by a tear-inducing rendition of “Taps”, expertly performed by Brian Smetzer and Briana Cardoso of the Award-winning Kerens Bobcat Band.
