This past Saturday, the Southern Oaks Volunteer Fire Department hosted a community event focused on safety, prevention, and giving back to the people they serve.
Throughout the event, firefighters distributed fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and fire blankets to residents. According to department representatives, approximately 550 alarm units have been distributed throughout the neighborhood so far — efforts they say have already helped prevent two house fires.
In addition to fire prevention equipment, the department also offers free CPR classes to the community. One staff member is specially trained to teach the courses and schedules classes whenever enough participants sign up — whether that’s six, eight, or a dozen people at a time. To date, she has trained approximately 75 individuals.
The impact of that training has already been felt locally. One community member who completed the CPR course reportedly used those skills just a week later to save her husband’s life — a powerful reminder of how preparedness can make all the difference.
Department members emphasized that the community consistently supports them through donations and encouragement, and events like this are one way they enjoy giving back.
For Southern Oaks Volunteer Fire Department, Saturday’s event wasn’t just about handing out equipment — it was about strengthening a community that continues to stand behind them.
