My name is Bobby (Bubba) Rutherford Jr. and we make a living buying selling cattle on property that my parents worked hard for, and land my wife and I have purchased with the profits from selling cattle.

Over the past three or four years we have fought hard to over come things such as drought in the summer time and cold hard winters. There are things we have to adjust for the simple fact that our weather conditions change, the cattle market changes, and the cost of staying in business has went up drastically. I had a gentleman call me on the phone a few months ago and was wanting to negotiate a deal to put solar panels on our property. At first I was not interested but they made it more interesting. At one point in the conversation he let me know, if I didn’t want the panels, they were coming across our property any way with eminent domain. That’s when I found out they were looking at a bigger piece of property behind me and they just wanted mine for a right of way. I let them know we were not interested and I have not heard anything since.
That brings me to this letter, in 2018 Vistra ceased operations at the Big Brown Power Plant in Freestone County. At that point they began to sell off all their assets. The State of Texas had been leasing the lake and the park area for the past fifty years. As a child and even as a grown up, I have a lot of good memories of the Fairfield Lake. I was really excited when I heard that the State of Texas was looking at keeping it a state park. Well the state drug their feet, wanting a better deal and a company by the name of Todd Interests signed a contract and paid for the property. Then all of the sudden, the State of Texas wanted to make it eminent domain. This is not right. The state had their opportunity, they missed it. The property now belongs to Mr Todd’s company. We can’t let this happen. If we sit on the sidelines and let it happen, your property is not safe. We cannot let the government move in and take land from an honest businessman doing things the right way. We need people to contact the appropriate officials to let them know this is not acceptable.
You don’t have to be from Freestone County to get involved, just a concerned citizen. I’m asking you to help me find ways to contact them in order to let these Commissioners and elected officials know we respectfully disagree with this move.
