Navarro County Commissioners Eddie Perry and Eddie Moore recently toured the site of the proposed Armadillo Solar Project; a major renewable energy initiative being developed by AES in partnership with local stakeholders.
The visit was part of a broader community open house aimed at increasing transparency, sharing project updates, and highlighting the anticipated benefits to the region.
Set to begin construction in Spring 2025, the Armadillo Solar Project will deliver 204 megawatts of clean, renewable energy—enough to power nearly 35,000 Texas homes annually. The commissioners received an in-depth overview of the project’s scope, environmental considerations, and economic impact during their tour, which included presentations from AES project managers and environmental specialists.
The Armadillo Solar Project is expected to generate over $300 million in capital investment and tens of millions in property tax revenue over its projected 40-year lifespan. These funds will support local schools, infrastructure, and essential services. The project will also create approximately two hundred construction jobs and sustain 2–3 long-term operational positions.
In addition to economic development, AES is prioritizing environmental stewardship. The project includes a robust sustainability plan featuring vegetation management, habitat conservation corridors, and a partnership with SOLARCYCLE to recycle solar panels responsibly. AES has already conducted a comprehensive suite of environmental and technical studies, including endangered species surveys, cultural resource assessments, and hydrological evaluations.
As the project moves toward the construction phase, AES will continue coordinating with local, state, and federal agencies to meet all permitting and regulatory requirements. Commercial operation is anticipated to begin in Winter 2026.
