This afternoon, former Palace Theater and Navarro Council of the Arts Executive Director, Leah Dill Blackard, turned herself into the Navarro County Justice Center. After the convened Navarro County Grand Jury returned a true indictment for Blackard last Friday, an arrest warrant was issued at the Navarro County District Clerk’s office.
Blackard has been missing from the public eye since December when embezzlement accusations first surfaced.
The Corsicana Police Department with the assistance of the Office of the Attorney General and the Navarro County District Attorney’s Office, spent the last few months tabulating funds missing from both organizations.
According to the Navarro County District Attorney’s office, theft totals show to be conservatively, over $1 Million.
Blackard has been charged with Theft of Property, greater than $300,000.00, a first degree felony, and at publication time is being held at the Navarro County Justice Center with a bond totaling $51,000.00.
“We are thankful to the grand jury and the Navarro County District Attorney’s Office and their diligence. We at the Palace Theatre are looking to the future moving forward and will continue to promote the Palace Theatre,” stated Malinda Veldman, Palace Theatre Board of Directors, President.
