Corsicana Legendary Station KAND 1340AM held it’s first ever broadcast on May 17th, 1937 and for the last 87 years, the radio station had served the Corsicana, Ennis and Waxahachie areas, providing news, local weather, sports and community coverage.
The station served as the home for the Corsicana Highschool and Navarro College football game broadcasts, aided in the communities buy/sell/trades and informed the local families on school closures, becoming a fixture of early morning listening.
Originally owned by J.C West, who owned the Wolf Brand Chili factory, West attempted to make the stations call sign WOLF but was unable to because of a station in New York who already held the moniker.
In 2008, KAND was sold to Yates Communications, who, two years later, sold it to New Century Broadcasting. The “Talk Time” program, which ran weekdays from 8AM to 10AM was one of the stations most popular fixtures but it was slowly phased out when the station owners discovered the listeners wanted to hear some music to go with their morning coffee. In 2014, KAND began playing country music full time, until, on Halloween, the radio station went fully silent.
There are discussions about the possibility of bringing the station back but at present time, without the finances to keep the station on the air, the owners made the difficult decision to shut down. November began with a missing piece to Corsicana’s legacy.
