By Hannah Barber,
During the Kerens City Council meeting on October 7, 2025, several important topics were discussed.
A public hearing was held regarding an application for a Specific Use Permit to establish “Multi-Use” zoning for residential, manufacturing, and commercial purposes on KERENS OT BLK 57 LOTS 5-8, located at 204 SE First Street. The landowner requested the permit to have the flexibility to build a residence as well as operate a machine shop, since the land is currently zoned solely for commercial use. A total of nine letters were received concerning the application, with five of them opposing it. Several nearby residents attended the meeting to voice their opinions. Ultimately, the permit was denied by all five council members present.

The council approved the appointment of Kaitlyn Cotton to fill the unexpired term of Darren Lane as a city council member for the city of Kerens. Following the approval, Kaitlyn Cotton was officially sworn in and recited her oath during the meeting. This appointment ensures that the council seat remains filled and continues to serve the interests of the community as the term progresses.
During the public comments segment, Katherine Combs’ sister came to speak on her behalf and played an audio recording of Katherine, the former secretary for the city of Kerens. In the recording, Katherine issued an apology to the mayor, expressed her love for her former role, and her affection for the city of Kerens. She also highlighted some of the improvements she made while serving as secretary. Additionally, another individual spoke in support of Katherine, suggesting that the city should consider rehiring her. The mayor and the city council did not provide any comments regarding Katherine or the secretary position.
