January 8th saw the return of illustrious Doctor Neal Green, who delighted the Kinsloe crowd with his quick and charming wit and humorous storytelling. Dr. Green regaled the audience with various tales of his experiences as a doctor, as the youngest son of a funeral director in Ferris, Texas, taking us through his start as a fourteen-year-old, driving an ambulance, all the way through to how he landed on his chosen field of obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Green showcased a wide array of knowledge in various medical fields, weaving in interlocking stories about how he courted his wife, Sylvia. He was accepted by both Southwestern Medical School and University of Texas Medical Branch before he had turned 21. He selected UTMB because of its history. It was a leader in infectious disease and the first medical school west of the Mississippi River.
He did an internship at John Peter Smith Hospital, a level one trauma hospital in Fort Worth in which Dr. Green studied for a future in family medicine. “That’s where the pages of the textbooks, the words on the pages of the textbook opened up and became real life,” Dr. Green stated, telling the group about his time as an intern while mixing humor with intense storytelling. He was a resident at Baylor for three year and then spent six years in the medical corps in the US Air Force finally practicing for 43 years in Corsicana as an OBGYN delivering between eight and nine thousand babies in his time as a practicing doctor. He has been retired now for more than seven years, spending his time traveling with his wife, Sylvia.
He told several stories spanning his time in the practice, many of which became “embellished over the years” from him driving his 1974 Toyota into the emergency room to him getting in trouble riding his bicycle through the hospital.
“I feel like I was called to do what I did for a living. And I feel like I answered that call.”
