On Wednesday, November 19th, the Kinsloe House hosted Master Gardener Bobbie Mason. She is a National Garden Club Environmental Consultant who recently became a master after schooling twice a year for eight years. Additionally, she is a Texas Garden Club Arbor Day chairman and the Blue and Gold Star Memorial chairman for the state and District X.
District X, Blackland’s, of the Texas Garden Clubs include Collin, Dallas, Grayson, Hunt, Kaufman, Navarro and Rockwall counties – composed mainly of black, limestone or heavy soil.
Mason educated members of the women’s club on what to plant during winter, as well as tips on flower arrangement. One could see her passion for plants as she lovingly described how she designed the arrangement she brought to the Kinsloe.
She continued, expertly placing each plant, “Then I just pull this one off because this is Queen’s Tears, and it just blows and blows and blows. What else can I do?” Mason makes use of succulents, weeds, and even toxic plants.
Nandina, or Sacred Bamboo, can be fatal to birds and pets when ingested in large quantities, especially the berries. “This has been in my yard for forty years, and I like the color. These leaves will be bright red when it gets to be Christmas time. I can cut all the berries off and put them in the trash.”
She took a few questions from members, one of whom asked about her overwatered and limp Thanksgiving Cactus.
“That is a wonderful thing to talk about. Don’t overwater ANY cactus,” Mason stated and then told how to rehabilitate the cactus.
Remove the cactus from its pot. Wash it completely off, lay it on a table, let it get dry, and it will perk overnight.
In her spare time, Mason can always be found gardening, borrowing neighbor’s wild foliage, and spending time with her husband and
horses. She generously donated the arrangement she demonstrated to the Kinsloe House, which was auctioned to a member for $180, of which all of the proceeds went to the Kinsloe House.
