“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

This quote was the central theme presented by Dawson City Councilman Chuck Raines during the May 20th Vietnam Veterans meeting in honor of Memorial Day. He addressed the primary reason our troops fought in the Vietnam War.
Communism spread across Russia in 1917 and quickly overtook China and several smaller nations. For the greater part of the 20th century, it divided countries and served as a catalyst for death and chaos. Over 100million people were murdered, slaughtered and starved, some becoming desperate enough to resort to cannibalism. Less than twenty years after the second World War, the U.S decided to strike against communism, sending troops into Vietnam in the hopes of creating a “domino effect” where if one communist nation fell, others were likely to follow.
The quote rings true today, in the modern world, where so many things are unjust and without the necessary number of people brave enough to stand against the evils wreaking havoc.
The meeting continued with the decision to sponsor the Navarro County Volunteer Firefighters Association’s upcoming banquet on August 19th. $314 was donated to the House of Refuge for the continued good works they facilitate.
The VVA scholarship essays have been reviewed and the winners of the annual NCVVA scholarship were voted on and will be announced likely at the next meeting.
Additionally, the VVA of Navarro County is preparing to send one of its members to the National VVA Chapter Meeting in August, opting to put $1,700 toward travel expenses for the five-day event.
