In the wake of tragedy, strength, and determination shines through. Kami Matthews, the widow of Kris Matthews, a dedicated law enforcement officer who retired from the Navarro County Sheriff’s Office after 23 years of service, has embarked on a heartfelt mission to honor her late husband’s memory.
Kris Matthews, a pillar of the community, devoted not only his career but also his heart to serving and protecting the residents of Navarro County. Matthews was a humble man, known for his unwavering dedication and his commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. Kris and Kami spent 23 precious years together and raising three beautiful children.
Tragically, Kris Matthews passed away unexpectedly in a tractor accident, leaving a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the community he served. With support of the Dawson Independent School District (Dawson ISD), a series of fundraisers to establish scholarship funds for eligible students interested in pursuing trade, police, and first responder education and training has begun after a successful trial last year.
The aim of these scholarships is to provide financial assistance to deserving students, allowing them to pursue their aspirations and follow in the footsteps of Kris Matthews. These scholarships will not only honor the memory of a dedicated servant but also support the next generation of individuals who are committed to serving their community in these vital professions.
Susan Henderson, the designated contact person at Dawson ISD, is excited to assist interested students in applying for these scholarships. Through her expertise and guidance, students can navigate the application process seamlessly. Henderson’s tireless efforts ensure that Kris’s legacy will continue to make a difference in the lives of those following in his footsteps.
Ms. Matthews has expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of support she has already received from the community. She knows that her husband’s impact extended far beyond his time in uniform, and she is determined to ensure his influence lives on through these scholarships. By assisting aspiring professionals interested in trade, police, and first responder careers, Kami hopes to create a lasting legacy that honors Kris’s dedication and selflessness.
As the fundraisers gain momentum Kris’s family is overwhelmed by the generosity they have witnessed. Businesses, local organizations, and community members are rallying together to provide support and contribute to these funds, demonstrating their appreciation for Kris’s service and their belief in the importance of education and training for future generations.
We invite all those interested in supporting the scholarship fund to reach out to Susan Henderson at Dawson ISD or make a donation directly to Citizens Bank in Dawson, TX. Let us come together, honor a remarkable man, and invest in the future of our community through education and opportunity.
