By Hannah Barber,
During the Freestone County Commissioners Court meeting on March 5, 2025, a pivotal topic of discussion was the approval of an agreement with the city of Oakwood.
The conversation was lively, with commissioners, the sheriff, and the district attorney presenting a range of hypothetical scenarios. Although this issue had been previously addressed, it resurfaced after one commissioner received numerous phone calls from residents seeking increased patrols in their area.
Three letters from concerned citizens were read aloud, emphasizing that the close proximity of the Oakwood Police Department bolstered their sense of safety whenever patrols were present.
This sentiment was particularly voiced by residents along County Roads 311, 321, 300, 301, and 333. However, the sheriff, along with two commissioners, opposed the proposal, expressing their belief that additional patrols were unnecessary.
Ultimately, after a divided decision among the commissioners, the agreement was approved by the judge, voting for community safety and law enforcement collaboration.
