On Friday night, as part of the Homecoming football pre-game events, Hubbard ISD honored and thanked the staff of Citizens State Bank for sponsoring their new scoreboard, featured for the first time at Jaguar Stadium. Pre-game festivities began by recognizing the alumni classes of 1973 and 1974, followed by an outstanding performance from the Drill Team. Afterwards, all of the Citizens State Bank staff from the Hubbard branch were present, as an enormous homecoming mum was hoisted over the new football scoreboard. The celebration was complete with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The bank recently donated three new scoreboards to the school district, for football, baseball, and softball, totaling approximately $45,000 for all. Kimbel Schmidt, Branch Manager/AVP, stated, “It was a process to make this happen. The coach and superintendent met with us, and we presented an estimate to the Board of Directors. After their meeting, we were thrilled to find out that the board approved not only one, but all three new scoreboards.”
The elaborate 20-foot-long mum featured a gorgeous yellow, black, and white cascade of colorful Jaguar themed logos, braids, and ribbons. It was designed and constructed by Laura Ann Westfall’s 9th Period Floral Design class, which had ten students on the mum project. Westfall explained, “We worked on it in stages. Surprisingly, it only took about five hours to prep and two hours to construct and assemble on the field. I don’t know if it breaks any records but it’s the longest I’ve seen so far.”
With the popularity of homecoming mums growing exponentially over time, along with their outrageous sizes, it should come as no surprise that giant mums are trending among Texas school districts. Westfall shared, “The floral design teachers in the state have a facebook page that we share ideas on, and I’m not sure who the first was but it’s been a trend for a few years now.”
Alyssa Kraayvanger, softball pitcher (and star pitcher her freshman year), was happy to hear about the new scoreboards. She stated, “I love the new scoreboard so much and can’t wait to see the other two. I love new things and I’m always excited to see new growth at our school and new things happening!”
Pre-game activities concluded with the official homecoming game coin-toss, handled by retiring Citizens State Bank employee, Gail Waller. Waller is retiring after 11 years of employment at the Hubbard location.
