Local heart hero, Samantha Thompson, an eighth grader at Mildred Junior High School, has been nominated to be a part of the Teen of Impact Campaign for the American Heart Association’s Southwest Region.
The American Heart Association’s newest initiative, Woman of Impact and Teen of Impact, is a step off the AHA’s Go Red for Women Movement. The Teen of Impact movement began at the beginning of February and will end on April 7th. The Teen of Impact program gives teens the opportunity to make changes in their own lives and their communities by taking charge of their own health, spreading the message of health to their communities, and advocating for policies to improve health. A select group of individuals were named in the markets.
Miss Thompson has undergone three open heart surgeries since her birth in 2009. Shortly after her birth she had open heart surgery to attempt to correct a birth defect. Thompson is the daughter of Darrell and Jennifer Thompson and the granddaughter of ‘Coach’ Sam and Paulette Thompson. Dad, Darrell Thompson, who coaches at Corsicana ISD, stated, “We were worried about her surgeries, and the quality of life she would have as she grew up.” The Thompson family is no stranger to service to community, which makes the Teen of Impact nomination a blessing to Miss Thompson. Mom, Jennifer Thompson stated, “We are very proud of her, since only 24 other kids in 6 states were chosen. This is going to be a good experience for her; getting donations and learning lots about leadership skills and leading a team.”
Samantha has already raised almost $6,000.00 with a team of 10 so far and has set a new goal of $15,000.00 before the deadline ends. Donate here https://app.mobilecause.com/form/GSokqw?parent_id=697034&vid=q572p.
