City of Corsicana, Navarro College Pearce Museum, and Texas State
Library and Archives Commission Join Forces to Present Historic Exhibition
The City of Corsicana, in collaboration with the Navarro College Pearce Museum and the Texas State
Library and Archives Commission, is proud to announce a six-month-long special exhibition in
commemoration of Corsicana’s 175th Anniversary. This exceptional showcase will feature the historic
document titled “An Act to Locate the County Seat of Navarro County,” from the 2nd Legislature,
Regular Session, approved on February 12, 1848. This document officially designates Corsicana as
the city and county seat for Navarro County.
Corsicana will play host to a six-month-long exhibition featuring the original 1848 document that
established Corsicana as the county seat of Navarro County. The collaborative efforts of Tourism Director
Amy Tidwell and Pearce Museum Director Ann Zembala, working in tandem with the Texas State
Library and Archives Commission since June, have brought this special exhibit to Corsicana. Amy
Tidwell, Tourism Director for the City of Corsicana, expresses her enthusiasm: “We are excited to offer
this exhibit to our citizens and visitors, providing them with the opportunity to view the original
document from 1848 that laid the foundation for our great city.”
The exhibition will be prominently displayed in the Pearce Museum rotunda gallery, open to the public
from October 4th, 2023, through April 1st, 2024. The official launch of the exhibit will take place at the
Pearce Museum gallery rotunda on Wednesday, October 4th, at 2 p.m., with a kickoff reception that is
free and open to the public. Mayor Mike Fletcher will be in attendance to issue a proclamation in
honor of the exhibit and to celebrate Corsicana’s recognition of National Archives Month. The exhibit has
been made possible through the generous support of the Archives and Information Services Division of
the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. Additionally, copies of this historical document will
be on display at several locations throughout the city, making it accessible for both citizens and visitors.
These locations include the Navarro County Courthouse, City of Corsicana Government Center,
Corsicana Visitors Center, and the Corsicana Public Library.
This exhibition is being organized to commemorate the City of Corsicana’s 175th Anniversary and to
celebrate its rich history. The exhibit’s launch coincides with National Archives Month, an observance
that raises public awareness about the significance of historic documents and records. City Manager
Connie Standridge remarks, “This document tells our history and how visionaries before us saw
Corsicana as a place of opportunity—a principle we continue to uphold today.”
