Early this morning, Corsicana Police Officer Tommy Ordonez observed a Burglary of a Motor Vehicle in progress, near the 700 block of S. 7th Street.
Officer Ordonez noted in his report that the rear window of the vehicle had been shattered, with one suspect fleeing the vehicle.  Officer Ordonez pursued the suspect, a 16-year old male, and used his patrol vehicle to intercept and block the suspect’s path. During the pursuit, Ordonez exited his patrol vehicle and continued the foot pursuit, which ultimately returned to the original crime scene.
A physical struggle, as the suspect resisted arrest, resulted in Officer Ordonez’s injury – a deep laceration to his forearm, after coming into contact with broken glass from the vehicle. Despite his injury, Officer Ordonez was able to subdue and handcuff the juvenile. A search revealed two handguns in the suspect’s possession. A 3rd handgun was recovered in the crime scene area. The juvenile was transported to a facility in Longview and is currently charged with – Burglary of a Motor Vehicle, Resisting Arrest, Search, and Transport, and Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon.
Corsicana Police Officer Corporal Garrett Harrell observed a second suspect fleeing the scene. After a short pursuit, the suspect, identified as a 17-year old Hispanic male, was apprehended by Cpl. Harrell and was transported to the Navarro County Justice Center. He is currently being held for Burglary of a Motor Vehicle and Evading Arrest or Detention.
Additional charges are likely as the investigation continues.
Officer Ordonez was transported by ambulance to Parkland Hospital in Dallas, where he has been admitted and is scheduled to undergo surgery for his injury on Tuesday morning.
CPD Chief Robert Johnson stated, “I want to commend Officer Ordonez for his bravery and determination under pressure. Despite being seriously injured, he ensured the apprehension of an armed suspect and likely prevented further violence in our community. This incident serves as a reminder of the risks our officers face every day. The Corsicana Police Department continues to investigate this case and will release further updates as they become available.”
